Training Reviews - Weeks 35 & 36

OK, I was just too busy to write this one at the time so here are the numbers and a very quick recap. Down on all the numbers, partly as the targets ramp up at this point in my season as I should be finished racing by now, but also as I had to fit four races, a load of travel and some coursework in that just sucked up all my free time.

Loch Ore Cross Triathlon I had a decent race. I didn't like the cold water but I swam okay, better  than I expected in my current form. I biked fairly well too. Nothing superb on what is a fairly benign mob course, but I was happy enough with it. I then managed to catch back some time on what was a half-and-half road and cross country run, enough to get 3rd Vet, and a potential qualifying time for 2025 Cross International races. We had a cool van adventure as well so a good trip all round.

Krunce Hill Race #6. I finally had the run that has been lurking all year. But the conditions weren't great so it came out 2 seconds slower than my fastest time this year, which was run in perfect conditions. I finished 4th overall on the night and beat the whole pack of bodies taht I have been following all year.

Fetternear hill race, two days later probably wasn't enough recovery time and because of that it was more of a fast off-road training run than a race. I started in 4th place, twisted my ankle on one of the climbs and backed off for a while for safety reasons, dropping back to 5th in the process, before the course flattened out again and I decided to move back up to 4th and put a bit of a push through the last mile. Happy to manage to back up Tuesday with a second good run in the same week.

Gordonstoun Sprint Triathlon, I have a decent swim, but within the first couple of minutes on the TT bike I just felt like everything was wrong. It wasn't too windy, but was cold and wet and misty, with limited visibility. My balance on the bike felt awful, the shoes felt wrong, the helmet made me feel claustrophobic and made approaching cars sound as if they were coming much too close (they weren't, it was all in my head). I was getting passed within the first mile by riders that I should have been dropping even whilst sat up on the bike, and whenever I go in the TT bars I was frankly terrified. I road round about half a lap and took the first opportunity to bail and head back to transition and quit.
